Are crane inspections allowed to be documented electronically?

OSHA allows electronic logs for crane inspections so long as they are retained for minimum durations, depending on the inspection type

As crane and construction companies bring their workforces into the digital age, activities like inspections and maintenance move from paper forms to tablets, mobile phones, and laptops.

Digital documentation must still conform to OSHA's crane inspection retainage requirements (see table below).

Crane Inspection Type Retained Duration
Each Shift n/a
Monthly 3 months
Annual/Comprehensive 12 months

Digital records have the benefit of consistent and legible data entry, and retainage on a local or cloud server, meaning records can be accessed by anyone with permissions at any time.
