Are training or resources on sizing electrical wires (power & control) for overhead cranes?

ITI provides training and resources for overhead inspection and maintenance

Regulation

National Electrical Code (NEC) NFPA 70 - Article 610, Cranes and Hoists
Table 610.14(A) shows the allowed ampacity of power cables and a reduction factor if the ambient temperature is more than 86-deg F.

National Electrical Code (NEC) NFPA 70 - Article 310, Conductors for General Wiring
Table (310.15(B)(16) for power cables, but the allowed ampacity is smaller than in article 610. (Article 610 is preferable).

In Article 310 is also the ampacity chart for multiconductor cables and a derating chart for the number of wires in the cable.

Note: Most electrical cable manufacturers provide the NEC charts at the end of their catalogs. This is probably the easiest way to find the information you are looking for.

Best Practice

  • If this is a wire replacement, use the same size that is currently installed installed.
  • Check the crane manual and spare part list. Look for the specifications of the cables to be replaced.
  • If you work with a supplier or distributor, ask them for a recommendation and a quote.
