Rigging Training 101: My First Class

My name is Sima Patel and I am to the new Client Services Department at Industrial Training International.  I came into the world of Rigging and Crane Operation with zero knowledge of the industry.  In fact, I had never heard of the term “rigging”.  In the little time that I have been here I have had the pleasure of attending some rigging courses and I can tell you that I find it a very interesting subject.

I walked into my first training class with instructor Jim Cox completely intimidated by the whole subject, especially when I was surrounded by a room full of riggers taking the class for additional training.  As I listened to Jim speak I glanced around the room to find the students hanging on every word.  What surprised me was that I completely understood what Jim was teaching – he made it so simple!  It was amazing.  I began with no clue, and after a few hours I could name off different types of slings and hardware, and even learned how to estimate a load’s weight.  The information presented was informative, easy to follow, and tailored to the specific student’s needs that were in the class.

I got some feedback from the students on my way out of the class.  I asked them if the material they learned was useful, and if they felt that it was applicable at their jobs.  The response was overwhelming.  They told me they learned things that they never knew as riggers.  Furthermore, the job-specific questions they had were easily answered and made sense.  Mission accomplished!

I will continue to embark on the journey of crane and rigging knowledge.  I will keep you posted.

Until then, Happy Rigging!
