What to Expect

Candidates must demonstrate skills in planning, preparing, and executing rigging operations under realistic jobsite conditions. The exam includes:

  • Selection and inspection of appropriate rigging hardware and gear.
  • Proper hitch applications, including vertical, basket, and choker configurations.
  • Use of hand signals and tag lines to guide load movement.
  • Understanding of center of gravity, sling angles, and load distribution.
  • Identification of potential hazards and appropriate risk mitigation.

All tasks are timed and evaluated by an NCCCO-accredited practical examiner using standardized scoring criteria. The exam is designed to reflect real job requirements and confirm the candidate’s ability to perform rigging duties safely and reliably.

Who Should Take the Exam

This practical exam is intended for individuals pursuing NCCCO Rigger Level I certification. It is appropriate for riggers, maintenance personnel, ironworkers, millwrights, and others responsible for load handling activities on construction or industrial sites. Candidates must have successfully passed the NCCCO Rigger Level I written exam prior to scheduling the practical.

Exam Environment

The exam is conducted at ITI Training Centers or customer sites equipped with the necessary materials and rigging equipment. The testing environment simulates actual field conditions and includes real-world rigging challenges that must be completed within the defined parameters.

Certification and Compliance

Successful completion of the practical exam results in a nationally recognized certification issued by the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO).
