Mr. Shapiro comes from a line of crane-expert engineers. He and his brother, Jay, are the sons of Howard Shapiro, the original author of the key industry text, Cranes & Derricks.  Mr. Larry Shapiro earned a BS in Civil Engineering from the University of Virginia in 1978 and has been practicing crane and rigging engineering ever since.  Early in his career, for Harnischfeger, Mr. Shapiro was a stress analyst for the design of mobile cranes and he analyzed critical components for new models and the uprating of existing models. From 1979 to 1983, Mr. Shapiro engineered precast concrete and hyperbolic colling towers for Zurn Industries. Then, from 1983 on, Mr. Shapiro was fortunate to work with his father, first for Charles M. Shapiro & Sons, and now, Howard I. Shapiro & Associates.

Mr. Shapiro has vast expertise in several areas of construction engineering including the design of temporary structures, installation design for tower and mobile cranes, derricks, hoists, scaffolding, and shoring, planning of means and methods for construction, constructability and logistics studies, rigging design and procedures, assurance of structural integrity of buildings in alteration or demolition, the analysis of construction loads on structures and soil, stress analysis for proof of competence of cranes and other lift equipment, emergency assessment, stabilization and recovery of construction equipment and structures in distress.  Additionally, his structural engineering capabilities and experience includes the design of structures systems, components and details for civil and mechanical engineering applications, and the design and detailing of building appurtenances.  Mr. Shapiro has also conducted many investigations of accidents and failures, and provided technical support for dispute resolution and litigation.

Mr. Shapiro Provides Instruction in the following Course:

  • RE-120 Crane & Derrick Engineering, Installation & Planning
