A long-time leader at General Dynamics Electric Boat shipyard in New London, Connecticut, Mr. Sweeney began his career in 1984 by graduating #1 in his class at the GDEB Career Development Program which places engineers in the shipyard as supervisors after intensive training. Mr. Sweeney has held several positions at GDEB.  As Ship Superintendent he managed the construction of missile compartments on Trident submarines. In 1990 Mr. Sweeney was promoted to the position of Supervisor of Crane Engineering where he held technical oversight for the safety, repair, maintenance, modification, overhaul, inspection, quality control, testing, and certification of Electric Boat’s cranes and nuclear lifting and handling equipment.

Since 2011, as the Manager of Lifting and Handling Equipment, Mr. Sweeney has been directly responsible for every aspect of the Electric Boat crane program,  including overall lifting and handling safety, managing a 3.8 million dollar budget, manpower planning for over 30 subordinates, project management, customer interface, technical engineering oversight and direction, procurement, long and short range planning, scheduling, contract administration, capital projects, environmental compliance, critical OSHA and Navy record keeping, audit preparation, administration, and training.  Responsibilities also encompass the maintenance, repair, testing, inspection, and certification of Electric Boat’s 250+ cranes in accordance with State and Federal laws, codes and standards, and U.S. Navy requirements.

As of 2015, after 31 years at Electric Boat, Mr. Sweeney has decided to start his own engineering practice providing crane and rigging consulting. He will officially retire from GDEB on July 31, 2015 and start Riverside Engineering, LLC in August 2015.
