National Crane Operator Certification Exam Practice
One of the required tasks of National Crane Operator Certification Exams requires the operator to display skills and ability by negotiating a "zigzag" corridor with a test weight on the hook. The task is timed and will reveal competency levels of the following operator attributes:
- Avoidance of Unsafe Acts
- Understanding of Crane Controls and Functions
- Load Control
- Travel Path Considerations
- Understanding of Crane Hand Signals
The zigzag task starts when the test weight is lifted into the air, whilst maintaining contact with the ground with a 36 inch chain on the bottom of the test weight. The operator then must navigate the test load through a corridor made up of PVC poles, topped with balls. Points are deducted for the following:
- Knocking a ball off a pole with the load
- Moving the base of a pole off of a line on which it is centered
- Knocking a pole over completely
- The chain on the bottom of the test weight leaving the ground
- Moving the load past poles with the chain off of the ground
- Touching the ground with the load
- Evading any portion of the corridor
- Excessive time to move the test weight through the corridor
